David has just handed in his master's thesis on nostalgia for pre-modernity in fantasy fiction at the University of Graz, Austria and aims to finish his studies shortly. Apart from studying, he is working part-time for the University’s alumni association with the focus on marketing and social media. When he is not editing or writing himself – after having published his first short story in our first issue – David likes to go for a run, hike or play spikeball.

Q&A

What was your favorite book as a child?

"The Lord of the Rings" — it got me interested in books and literature in the first place and I remember being ill in bed and listening to the audiobooks for whole days.

Do you remember the original reason or motivation why you started writing creatively?

As students of languages I guess many of us have the dream of having our own book on the bookshelf of a book shop or library. Me personally, I wrote some stories when I was still a kid and it was mostly for the fun of writing and creating my own world. Just as reading, writing also creates immense pleasure.

What was the most adventurous or thrilling thing you ever did/experienced?

That probably has to be my adventure trip to Thailand/Bali for three weeks in the summer of 2018. Having never been out of Europe before, this was the first time I experienced real culture shock and had to completely look after myself in a foreign country with only a backpack and a very limited budget — best vacation of my life.

Do you listen to music while reading or writing?

Mostly I cannot concentrate on reading with music in the background but if I listen to something while reading, it is mostly ambient, lo-fi hip hop/jazz instrumentals — definitely something without vocals or some music that is emotional to me in order to get into the right mood for the book.
